Chennai has always been known for its pure, unadulterated Kanjeevaram silks, popularly referred to as "pattu sarees." Having become synonymous with Chennai over the years, these sarees have remained traditional in design, motifs and colour combinations. There was little that was experimented on this range of sarees, since they were appreciated for what they stood for!

Like everything else, of late pattu sarees have also jumped onto the designer bandwagon!

Check out Sri Palam silks in T.Nagar for their recently launched Golusu Collection! When asked what inspired them to launch this new line, the store manager told me that silk sarees and golusu (or anklets) are symbols of Indian womanhood and they decided to bring the two together! Innovative thinking indeed!

The silk sarees in this collection come with delicate beadwork and sequins, almost tracing a golusu pattern along the border or pallu of the sarees. There are sarees with zardozi, some with tiny tinkling bells attached, others with dori work and some with little chain inserts, to resemble a golusu! Some sarees are painted with the outline traced in silver thread, others are printed with a golusu pattern border, and yet others come in stark plain silk with a stunning colourful border. It's an interesting collection to feast your eyes on! You can actually see how much work has gone.

T.Nagar isn't exactly my favourite when it comes to shopping areas! But at Sri Palam Silks you can sit in air-conditioned comfort, sip a chilled soft drink and take your pick from their vast collection! In fact, their wide range can keep you riveted for hours! They also boast of a dedicated NRI clientele, and all the silk saree lovers visiting Chennai, apart from the local shoppers. Well worth a visit...
